Stud Service Information
First off, thank you for considering one of our stud dogs for your breeding program. We are always grateful for your consideration.
We have written this in hopes to help answer any questions you may have. Many of you already know everything written here, but some might be new to breeding or just need a place to look back at our stud fees, how we work the service fee, where to send your check and how to make it out.
We offer two types of stud services; a service fee or a full fee stud service.
- Service Fee ($1000.00): The bitch owner pays $300.00 up front. We basically handle all aspects of the collection and shipping and help with the timing. If the bitch gets pregnant and has at least two live puppies, then the balance of the $700.00 is due and is to be paid within the first week of the birth of the puppies. If there are not at least two live puppies, no more monies are owed and there is no repeat or refund.
-Full Stud Fee ($1000.00): The bitch owner pays $1000.00 and again two live pups are guaranteed. If there are not two live puppies, a repeat breeding with any bitch owned or co-owned by the bitch owner can be bred to any stud dog Highlakes Labradors owns outright. The repeat needs to be used within a two year time period.
We do not board bitches in heat, but are happy to ship semen directly to you or your Vet.
We use the Minitube LT 10 day extender.
We use equine shipping boxes which are well made and insulated and have an excellent ice pack. If you are not using a Vet for the insemination, we will also provide you with a syringe and pipette. The syringe has no rubber parts (which can kill the semen) and the pipette is sterile and individually wrapped. The semen is in a well marked tube with waxed tape which is used in human labs and hospitals and gives a good seal on the tube lid. This tube is then put into a sealed plastic bag, just in case of the rare leak. The semen would still be enclosed and could still be used.
We only use FedEx and ask that you to please set up a FedEx account to charge shipping fees to. It costs nothing and can be set up over the phone in a matter of minutes. You only need a credit or atm card. We find that most of the issues we have with shipping are due to the bitch owner using a credit card to pay for shipping.
If you already have a FedEx account, please call and confirm that your credit card on the account is current (incorrect exp dates have held up many shipments) and also verify that you receive Saturday deliveries at the address you are using for shipping.
Besides the stud fee, the bitch owner is responsible for payment of the progesterone testing, shipping boxes ($30.00 per box), extender ($30.00 per collection), and shipping. The bitch owner will be responsible for these charges on a repeat as well. If you want to send boxes to us, please make sure they will reach us before your girl is ready. If we have to use our own boxes, you will be charged even if your boxes arrive the next day. Also, please do not send us a box that is not actually made for shipping semen. Boxes used to ship extender are not the same and do not keep the semen at the non-fluctuating temperature that is needed for fresh, chilled semen.
Good timing is essential and probably the most likely problem when bitches do not conceive. We will do what your Vet suggests, but the following protocol is what we believe should be followed. We like for the bitch owner to do the first progesterone test when they first realize their bitch is in heat. If the bitch is very low - for instance .2, then you can wait a few days to do the next test. However, we regularly see owners waiting until the 5th day of the heat cycle for their first test only to find their bitch is already a 10.0 and then we really have no idea where she is in her heat cycle.
The first important number we are looking for is the number 2.0, as this is most likely the day she has released her eggs - had her LH rise, and we know it takes the eggs four days to mature once released which is when we want to breed the girl. We do, however, need to continue with the progesterone test, because we need to confirm she has reached a 5.0 and has not stalled. A bitch will stall when she has not actually released her eggs yet, even though she has hit the number 2.0. Once she is over a 5.0, few bitches stall or go back down. Sometimes after a bitch reaches that all important 2.0, she will spike up to a 12 or 15 the next day. This means nothing - you still must wait four days because no matter her number, those eggs will not mature faster than four days. That is the reason for the importance of knowing when she reaches 2.0. If the first test you do shows she is already a 10.0, then we are merely guessing when she released her eggs. Was it the day before she reached that 10.0 or was it four days before? We have no way of knowing. If we breed now, are we too early, or right on time, or late? Again, we don’t know.
If you are doing a surgical implant on the girl, then you need to consult your Vet as to when they prefer to do that type of insemination. Most want the girl up over a 10.0. Also, please select a Veterinarian who has experience in doing this type of breeding.
We accept payment in the form of a check or through PayPal. If you are writing a check, please make the check out to Highlakes Labradors; please do not make it out to one of us individually. Mail the check to:

Please remember (and make sure your vet remembers also) that we do have lives, jobs, children, etc. and we do not sit by the phone waiting for that call telling us to “ship now”. If you call and ask us to ship that same day, we will absolutely do it if we are able, but there is a time limit on when the package is due at FedEx for express delivery. Good communication lets us plan ahead, and if we are going to be gone for the day, to collect before we leave the house that morning. Labrador people are pretty good about this, but sometimes the vets get the results back and tell the client to call the stud dog owner and tell them to ship that day. This can lead to disappointment on both our parts. Our main goal is to get good semen to you in a timely fashion and give you a nice big litter of puppies. Good communication will help us accomplish this.
Registering your litter: If you are in the U.S., we prefer you register your litter online and use Rhonda's email address which is email@example.com. If you register the litter online, sometimes it is a good idea to let us know you have done so. We can keep an eye out for that email as occasionally those emails do not make it to us. If time goes by, and you have not received that litter reg. confirmation from AKC in an email, please contact us. That means something has gone awry and we need to know about it. We try to respond to online registrations as quickly as possible.
